The channels off Diani and the wider Kenyan south coast are known for billfish and pelagic game fish. A full-day charter is one of the strongest “only on the coast” experiences we arrange alongside marine parks and island days.
What you can expect to target
Depending on season and conditions: striped and black marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado (mahi-mahi), wahoo, and various kingfish. Catch-and-release is common for billfish; keep policies depend on the boat and local rules.
Best seasons
Many captains favour the months when the monsoon patterns favour calmer runs offshore — roughly July through March for more reliable days, with peak billfish interest often concentrated in the warmer, clearer windows. We confirm current conditions with partner captains before locking a date.
How a day usually runs
- Early hotel pickup on the south coast (or meeting at the landing)
- Safety briefing and gear check
- Run out to the fishing grounds (time depends on target species and sea state)
- Trolling and/or bottom techniques as advised by the skipper
- Return in the afternoon; optional photo of the catch
Charters are typically tailor-made (your group only). Shared places can sometimes be arranged if you prefer lower cost and are flexible on dates.
What to bring
Sun protection, non-slip shoes, light layers, motion-sickness medication if needed, and a dry bag for phones. Most boats supply rods, reels, bait/lures, and basic soft drinks — we list inclusions clearly before you book.
Combining with other days
Fishing pairs well with a Wasini/Kisite snorkeling day or a short Tsavo East safari from Diani. Many guests do one ocean day and one inland game day in the same week.
