Kenya’s coast holds some of East Africa’s most accessible marine parks. From the south coast (Diani, Ukunda, Shimoni) you can reach protected reefs in under an hour by road and boat. Here is a practical guide to the five spots we use most often with guests.
1. Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park
The flagship day from Shimoni or Diani. Clear water, healthy coral, dolphin sightings on many mornings, and a classic dhow or motorboat run. Combined with a Wasini Island seafood lunch it is our most requested marine day. Best for snorkeling; diving is available with certified operators.
2. Mombasa Marine National Park
Close to Mombasa and Nyali hotels. Glass-bottom boats, short transfers, and good reef for first-time snorkelers. Ideal when you have limited time or prefer not to travel as far south as Shimoni.
3. Watamu Marine National Park
Further north, famous for turtle nesting and clear lagoon snorkeling. Worth the drive if you are already on the north coast or combining with Malindi. Excellent for families and intermediate snorkelers.
4. Malindi Marine National Park
One of Kenya’s oldest marine protected areas. Quieter than Watamu on many days, with strong coral and fish life. Best visited with a local captain who knows the channels.
5. Diani / Tiwi reef fringes
Not a full national park in every stretch, but the fringing reefs off Diani and Tiwi offer easy boat or even shore-accessible snorkeling when conditions are right. Useful for half-day options from south-coast hotels.
When to go
Seas are generally calmest from about July through March. April–June can bring rougher water and more rain on the coast. We check conditions the day before every departure and shift plans if needed.
How we run marine days
Hotel pickup, experienced captains, snorkeling gear, park fees where required, and a clear inclusions list before you book. Tailor-Made charters and small-group shared options are both available. Dietary needs (including seafood-free lunches on Wasini) are easy to arrange with advance notice.
